President declares Kerala as first digital state and inaugurates other  projects

India’s President, on a two-day trip to Kerala, declared it as the country’s first digital state; he also inaugurated other projects

President Pranab Mukherjee declared Kerala as India’s first digital state on February 27, at a function held at Uralungal (UL) Cyber Park’s premises in Kozhikode, on the second day, of his two day visit to Kerala.

The President also launched other projects at the function, attended by Governor P Sathasivam and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, among other officials. He launched the Digital Empowerment Campaign of the State government by distributing tablets computers to two police cadets. The campaign aims at empowering citizens from all walks of life. The other projects included the dedication of UL Cyber Park to the nation , the inauguration of the Gender Park and ‘Kanivu’ (Compassionate Kerala) projects of the state’s social justice department.

“I am confident that this Cyber Park will go a long way in positioning Kerala along with the other leading Indian States in the IT Sector.” said President Pranab Mukherjee.

With a high e-literacy rate and mobile penetration (32 m connections), Kerala is also the first to complete the National Optical Fibre Network project which helps to provide high-speed internet in all gram panchayats and remote areas. More than 3,000 offices in the state, including motor vehicle and land registration departments are now paperless and many government offices will also follow suit, shortly.

Meanwhile, the Digital Empowerment Campaign, which aims at bridging the digital divide by 2020, will use the services of Student Police Cadets (SPCs). According to the campaign, 40,000 student police cadets will train 10 lakh people in panchayats and other remote areas of the state. Tablets will be provided to these cadets and a committee will monitor the training sessions on real-time basis.
