Saturday , 20 February 2016

Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism, Mahesh Sharma, recently announced the introduction of a 24×7 toll-free helpline number (1-800-11-1363) for tourists who are in India or planning to visit the country.

The helpline will be available in Arabic, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Russian, Chinese and Portuguese, besides Hindi and English. Sharma said, “Languages were decided by tourist influx from the respective countries.”

Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Italian language helplines were successfully tested at the event.

Sharma stated that the helpline is in keeping with the tourism initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He added, “With the infoline, we hope to generate faith in Indian tourism among foreign travellers – the hope that if they are in distress, there will be help. I hope the project will be a success.”

According to Vinod Zutshi, Secretary, Tourism Ministry, “The objective of the project is IEC (Information, Education and Communication). The second objective is to develop a helpdesk. The infoline would help with tourist information and travellers stuck in times of distress. This is not just an infoline, but a helpline too.”
